The Origin and Development of Bonokyempim Ladies
Our History
Bonokyempim Ladies was founded on 25 December 2021 during a Christmas dinner hosted by Nana Poku at his residence in the Netherlands. Present at the gathering were Shirley, Naana Amponsah, Doris, Maa Afia, Elizabeth Darkoa, Pat, and Auntie Jullie.
During the festivities, Shirley proposed the formation of a ladies’ association to bring together women from the Bono and Bono East Regions of Ghana who reside in the Netherlands. She suggested the name Bonokyempim Ladies and explained that the association would serve as a platform to promote unity, solidarity, friendship, and mutual support among its members. The association would also provide welfare assistance and support to members and their families during times of need.
The proposal was warmly welcomed and seconded by Naana Amponsah. She further remarked that Nana Ama of Amsterdam North had, on several occasions, expressed a similar vision of establishing an organization for women from the Bono Regions living in the Netherlands. The idea received unanimous support from all those present.
Immediately after the meeting, Shirley created a WhatsApp group for the seven founding members to facilitate communication and coordination. Nana Poku also recorded a short video announcing the formation of Bonokyempim Ladies and shared it on social media. The announcement quickly attracted attention and generated widespread interest within the Bono community across the Netherlands.
A few weeks later, the founding members met again at the funeral ceremony of the late Simon, a citizen of Bono, held at Kandelaar Social Centre in Amsterdam Southeast. During the event, they presented a financial contribution to the bereaved family. Taking advantage of the gathering, they formally introduced Bonokyempim Ladies to the wider Bono community and invited all interested women from the Bono and Bono East Regions to join the association.
Following this public introduction, membership applications began to arrive steadily, and the organization experienced rapid growth. As Bonokyempim Ladies expanded, men from the Bono and Bono East Regions of Ghana residing in the Netherlands also expressed their support for the initiative. Their encouragement, guidance, and commitment contributed significantly to the growth and success of the association, and they now serve as Patrons of the organization.
Since its establishment, Bonokyempim Ladies has grown into a vibrant and respected community organization. The association continues to promote unity, cultural identity, friendship, welfare, and mutual support among women from the Bono and Bono East Regions living in the Netherlands.
The leadership and members of Bonokyempim Ladies extend their sincere appreciation to all founding members, patrons, supporters, and members whose dedication, hard work, and contributions have helped shape the organization. What began as a simple idea shared during a Christmas gathering has developed into a strong and successful association that continues to make a positive impact on the lives of its members and the wider community.
The journey of Bonokyempim Ladies has been one of unity, commitment, growth, and success, and the association looks forward to building an even stronger future for generations to come.
